We’re less than three months away from the announcement of Apple’s iPhone 14 line. We expect the iPhone 14 to be introduced in September 2022 and rumors suggest we could see a redesign, the biggest camera update in recent years and more. Head on below as we gather all the rumors of the iPhone 14 so far.
What will the iPhone 14 be called?
Since the iPhone introduced in 2021 was branded as the iPhone 13, we expect the 2022 iPhone to be the iPhone 14. It remains to be seen whether or not Apple will return to the “S” brand, but rumors indicate that the 2022 iPhone will. be an update large enough to guarantee a whole new number.
There is also the possibility that Apple will completely abandon the numbers in the iPhone line and the new iPhones will be designated simply by their size, “Pro” or not Pro, and year. This would coincide with what Apple has done with the iPad line in recent years.
Apple’s marketing names are kept secret until the last minute. That means we’ll have to wait until 2022 to learn more about what this year’s release will be officially called.
iPhone 14: no notch, but …
The biggest change we are currently waiting for with the iPhone 2022 is the removal of the notch cut. The notch design was first introduced with the iPhone X and has remained the same ever since. The notch is where Apple hosts its sensors for things like Face ID.
Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple will lower the level in 2022, starting with the high-end iPhone 14 Pro. Instead of the notch, the iPhone 14 will use a new “tablet hole” design. Instead of a simple punch clip used by many Android phones, Apple will use a combination of a punch clip and a pill-shaped clip.
This will allow Apple to introduce the front camera and Face ID hardware, while increasing the amount of screen available. In March, 9to5Mac exclusively reported that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will have slightly larger screens. This was also corroborated by analyst Ross Young.
- iPhone 13 Pro – 6.06 “
- iPhone 14 Pro – 6.12 “
- iPhone 13 Pro Max – 6.68 “
- iPhone 14 Pro Max – 6.69 “
Here’s the technology currently in the iPhone’s notch:
- Infrared camera
- Flood illuminator
- Proximity sensor
- Ambient light sensor
- Speaker
- Microphone
- Front camera
- Spotlight
In a report, Young explained:
We now believe that Apple will have a hole + pill design in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models. The smallest hole will not be invisible … The concept of two holes will be unique to Apple, like the notch, not similar to all Huawei pill models.
The design of the pill hole may not be as ambitious as some had hoped, but it is the next step in the process of making the iPhone truly complete, with no cuts.
Without Touch ID
Although early rumors of the iPhone 14 indicated that Apple would carry the lower touch screen ID on the iPhone, this no longer seems to be the case. More recent reports from Ming-Chi Kuo suggest that Apple has been forced to delay touch ID below the screen until 2023.
According to Kuo, Apple has faced “lower-than-expected development progress” in its work to integrate Touch ID into the iPhone’s screen. It’s also possible that Apple will take a less ambitious approach and integrate Touch ID into the iPhone’s power button, similarly to the iPad Air and iPad mini. But in the end, Touch ID isn’t expected to be a feature of the iPhone 14 this year.
The iPhone 14 will offer the biggest camera updates in recent years
The iPhone 14 will also include dramatic improvements to the front camera, according to Kuo. The most important change will be the updates of the autofocus features of the front camera. No further details are clear here, but the iPhone’s front camera has a way to go to catch up with the rear camera.
As for the rear camera, Kuo says the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will be upgraded to 48 megapixels, an increase from the iPhone 12’s 12-megapixel sensor.
Although the sensor is 48 megapixels, it is possible that the iPhone’s output images still have a resolution of 12 megapixels. Similar to some Android phones, Apple could use a smart scale algorithm that takes 48-megapixel raw data and creates a 12-megapixel output image with more detail and less noise.
Kuo believes the camcorder system will also be upgraded for the iPhone 14, supporting 8K recording for the first time.
The touch of the camera has come to stay
Although early reports indicated that some models of the iPhone 14 will not feature a camera shot, this is no longer believed to be the case. In fact, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are expected to have larger camera shots than their predecessors.
Kuo offered a reasoning for this, saying the fault lies with the wide-camera upgrade:
The main reason for the larger and prominent impact of the 14 Pro / Pro Max rear camera is the upgrade of the wide camera to 48MP (compared to the 12MP of the 13 Pro / Pro Max). The diagonal length of 48MP CIS will increase by 25-35% and the height of the 48MP 7P lens will increase by 5-10%.
iPhone 14 to use Lightning
For several years, reports suggest that Apple could introduce a portless iPhone. This iPhone would not have a Lightning port; instead, it would be completely wireless. It was once rumored that this would come in 2021, but that didn’t happen.
It is rumored that the portless iPhone is something that Apple is still testing, but at the moment there are a few years left. In fact, Apple is expected to switch to USB-C in 2023. But the iPhone 14 that will arrive this year will still use Lightning.
However, it is rumored that Apple will increase Lightning data transfer rates to USB 3.0 from the iPhone 14 Pro this fall. USB 2.0 supports transfer speeds of 480 Mbps, while USB 3.0 supports speeds of up to 5 Gbps. With 8K video recording on the way, faster data transfer speeds are needed.
While some rumors had anticipated that the iPhone 14 could use a new chip produced with 3-nanometer technology, it is no longer expected to be so. Apple chip partner TSMC is currently expected to use an improved 5 nm manufacturing process for the iPhone 14 chip, probably called the A16.

IPhone 14 performance: a major change
The iPhone 14 line is expected to announce a major shift in the differentiation strategy between “Pro” and non-Pro models.
For the first time, Apple is expected to only upgrade the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to its newest processor. These two models are expected to be upgraded to the A16 chip, while the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will retain the same A15 chip within the current iPhone 13 line.
The A16 chip of the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max will be manufactured with the same 5-nanometer process as the A15, which is also the same as the A14. This limits performance improvements year after year, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see any improvement.
Release Date: When will the iPhone 14 come out?
With the exception of the iPhone 12, which was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the new flagship iPhones are announced and generally released in September. The iPhone 14 will launch sometime during the second half of 2022, according to Kuo. As such, the iPhone 14 line is likely to be announced in September 2022.
Kuo also predicts that the iPhone 14 Max, or whatever it’s called, will be priced below $ 900.
