The iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max can include an always-on display mode for the lock screen, reports Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.
In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman described some of the changes planned for iOS 16, iPadOS 16, watchOS 9, tvOS 16 and macOS 13 at Apple’s World Developers Conference (WWDC) this year. Among the new features rumored for iOS 16 is an improved lock screen with “widget-like wallpapers”. Lock screen enhancements laid the groundwork for future features, including “always on” mode. In fact, Gurman said that OSiOS 16 actively includes “future support” for an ever-active lock screen.
It was rumored that the iPhone 13 Pro models had an active screen last year, but it seems that the feature was abandoned before the devices were launched in September 2021. Gurman claims that Apple has continued to work on the function and in “always on mode”. is now in development for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, providing “quick display information, similar to the newest Apple watches.”
The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max were the first iPhones with 120 Hz ProMotion screens, enabled by the adoption of LTPO panel technology with variable refresh rates. Current iPhone ProMotion screens are limited to screen refresh rates between 10 Hz and 120 Hz. On the other hand, LPTO panels used by Oppo and Samsung can go down to 1 Hz when a still image is seen or when the device is idle.
Well-connected screen analyst Ross Young recently said he “expects” the ProMotion screens used on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to be able to drop to the same 1 Hz level, effectively eliminating the hardware limitation that prevents Apple from offering an always-on mode on iPhone 13 Pro models. However, Gurman warned that the feature may not reach the final cut when the iPhone 14 line is announced in September.
