“It’s crazy”: Johnny Depp ate fish and chips at Newcastle’s Bridge Tavern and asked staff about Tyne Bridge

People were stunned to see Johnny Depp sitting inside a Newcastle pub with Sam Fender.

Crowds could not believe their eyes when they saw the Hollywood star eating fish and chips at The Bridge Tavern on Quayside. The actor, who was having dinner with friends on Wednesday night, was later joined inside the pub by Seventeen singer Going Under.

Johnny was seen in town the same night as the verdict in his defamation case with Amber Heard, which he won. He is expected to appear on stage with Jeff Beck during his show at The Sage in Gateshead on Thursday.

Janine Latchford, general manager of The Bridge Tavern, told Chronicle Live: “Johnny came in first, he was with some friends, but he was pretty cool. He didn’t want anyone to see who he was.

“We gave him a private space and he was the most charming man I’ve ever seen in my life. My assistant is very pregnant and I told him how nice it was to be a father. He was really down to earth, he was charming.

“It was amazing. He gave me a hug and I told him I loved him pretty much as soon as I saw him! He loved the artwork and was asking questions about Tyne Bridge. He said he had never been to Newcastle before.

“He was eating fish and chips. He said the food was amazing.”

The 33-year-old, who lives in Jesmond, said that when Johnny first entered the pub around 5 p.m., he was sitting in the corner eating his food. He said the pub gave him the upstairs room where he met Sam, who is from North Shields.

Janine said, “I don’t think Sam met Johnny before. Johnny will do a show tomorrow at The Sage. Whoever he was with must have met Sam Fender, so they met. Sam Fender arrived about half an hour later when the terrace was closed “.

Janine added: “It was amazing for the pub, I had never seen anything like it before.

“It was definitely the most surreal day of my life! It’s crazy.”

An excited gambler, who did not want to be identified, described seeing the couple at the pub. He said Johnny was wearing sunglasses and a cap.

The woman said, “He was here enjoying a soda. Sam Fender was cooling off with him. I felt a great thrill, it’s Johnny Depp in Newcastle! He wasn’t dressing up, just smiling.”
