Josh Jenkins has urged Port Adelaide to wear the prison bar jersey in Round 23, despite reports suggesting a request has been rejected.
The Herald Sun reported on Friday that Port hoped “gentle diplomacy” would resolve the long-standing issue, but Collingwood is not prepared to allow another club to wear the black and white stripes.
Magpies chairman Jeff Browne told the Herald Sun there had been no change in the club’s view.
The AFL’s view is that Port Adelaide and Collingwood will have to negotiate a deal if the power take the jumper.
However, former AFL forward Josh Jenkins is adamant the league will not take genuine action against Port if they bring the jumper into the Round 23 clash as expected.
“Just put it on,” he told SEN’s The Run Home.
“Don’t pay the fine, who cares? What will they do, dock them four points? It’s outrageous.
“Just put it on and worry about the ‘consequences’ later. I think the AFL would fine them, and I’m not sure the bill will even come.”
“I don’t understand why it has to be such a big deal, I just don’t understand. It’s one game a year.”
The Run Home co-host Andy Maher agreed, suggesting Collingwood’s tough stance makes the club look “small”.
“I hope they keep going Port Adelaide … they never stop trying to get the AFL to cave in to let them wear their traditional prison bar shirt,” he added.
“There’s only one reason they bounce it, we get it.
“(Port Adelaide) are playing Adelaide in round 23, it’s their home game, and because of an issue one club has with it, they’re frustrated again.
“I’m actually fed up with it, it’s mean-spirited … nobody’s trying to take (Collingwood’s) black and white stripes off.
“It makes Collingwood look small to stop Port Adelaide from wearing that jersey. That’s not who they are, Collingwood are big and they’re trying to be bigger, wider and more inclusive.”
Power became his prison bar strip after the win over Adelaide last year.
Collingwood host Port Adelaide on Saturday afternoon in what is sure to be a heated clash.
