Jerome Powell pressed on how the Fed would respond to the economic downturn

Lawmakers put pressure on Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on how the central bank would handle the offsets it could face if interest rate hikes abruptly slow the economy but do not reduce inflation quickly.

Mr. Powell said Thursday that in such a scenario, the central bank would be reluctant to move from raising rates to cutting them until it saw clear evidence that inflation was falling convincingly.
