A jewelry store owner says he’s frustrated moving to a new location hasn’t resolved trespassing concerns.
At 6:19 a.m. Saturday, two masked men with a crowbar and a hammer broke into Beck Antiques & Jewelery Inc.’s new Sherwood Park Mall location, according to a news release from the business.
“We’ve been hit by a couple of cringes and it’s unfortunate that people are so desperate that they resort to crime,” founder Clinton Beck said in the statement.
“The investigation is ongoing into this break and enter,” Cst. Sherwood Park RCMP Drew Burchett said in a news release.
“It appears that the damage caused during this event may be more costly than the items taken.”

The statement says the company has surveillance video of the incident and that the thieves broke the glass in the mall’s Cineplex front door to gain entry into the building. They proceeded to smash the shop window before smashing display cases and stealing jewellery, coins and a collection of old banknotes.
Beck said in the statement that more than one of his stores has been targeted by thieves. The repeated incidents led Beck to move to Sherwood Park Mall five months ago, as he believed it would be safer to operate inside a mall.
“Unfortunately, this is becoming the norm in this business,” Beck said. “We do everything we can to prevent this type of theft, but these two criminals were in and out in two minutes.”
Despite the theft, Beck said the store remains open for business.
“We are still fighting the good fight and looking forward to a very merry Christmas.”
