Jim Ryan says PlayStation has 2 unannounced live service games for this fiscal year

PlayStation is set to launch two live service games during its current fiscal year, which ends in March 2023.

That’s according to Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan, who said during a business briefing on Thursday that the company currently had what it considered a live service game on MLB The Show 22.

MLB The Show’s Diamond Dynasty mode allows players to purchase random card packs to try to build a dream team, either by winning or buying game currency.

A shared slide during the briefing session showed that the company plans to double the number of service sets during its current fiscal year, fiscal year 22.

Asked by an analyst whether the two additional titles were announced or include a release of Destiny from Bungie, the studio to be acquired, Ryan said: “Destiny is not included in the three games scheduled for this year. 22. The other two have not yet been announced. “

During the briefing, Ryan said that Sony considered live service titles to be “endless games.” Sony plans to release 12 such titles for fiscal year 2025, according to a slide show during the briefing, with three coming in fiscal year 23, four in fiscal year 24 and two more. fiscal year 25.

During the same briefing, Ryan suggested that at least some of the live service games he has in development be planned for PC.

PlayStation has become known for its successful single-player games such as Spider-Man, The Last of Us and Ghost of Tsushima. But last May, Sony said it planned to “develop more service-oriented experiences” within its own roster.

One of the planned live service games to be released in the next 10 months could be Naughty Dog’s developing multiplayer game The Last of Us.

Naughty Dog has long been hiring for its “first standalone multiplayer game,” which could be the result of the delayed online mode of The Last of Us Part 2 being expanded to its own title.

Horizon Forbidden developer West Guerrilla is also working on an online game, according to job postings.

Another title that is understood to be in development is a reboot of the Twisted Metal car combat series, which could coincide with a planned TV series.

VGC first reported earlier this year that UK-based Firesprite, which was acquired by Sony last year, had taken over an unannounced Twisted Metal project, after an earlier version of the studio Destruction All Stars Lucid stopped developing.

Sony has also signed an original multiplayer project to Firewalk, a new studio founded by Bungie veterans, and will release the debut title of Deviation Games, a studio run by former Call of Duty veterans Dave Anthony and Jason Blundell.
