HBO is not officially moving forward with JJ Abrams’ ambitious sci-fi drama series Demimonde. The decision comes after weeks of talks with Abrams, its producer Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television, which focused on the program budget. As Deadline reported last month, project studies, Warner Bros. Television and HBO, had tried to control costs, but Bad Robot stood firm in its proposed budget, which was said to be in the middle of $ 200 million, and would do not accept a reduction.
The final stages of Demimonde’s talks were held against the backdrop of a broader re-evaluation of the massive deal that Abrams’ Bad Robot has with Warner Bros. in terms of movies, television, games, and digital content. that the new Warner Bros. Discovery is examining all aspects of the assets they took on when the merger was completed in April.
Bought by HBO four years ago with a direct order to the series, Demimonde, which was developed and sold under Bad Robot’s previous WBTV pact, was still in early pre-production when the plug was removed.
Written, executive producer and directed by Abrams, Demimonde, her first solo television creation from Alias, starred Danielle Deadwyler as Olive Reed, who is ripped from her husband and daughter in a brutal science accident. She is forced to unravel a conspiracy to reunite with her family, now lost in another dark and distant world.
Kira Snyder, Rand Ravich and Far Shariat served as showrunners. They were executive producers with Abrams of Bad Robot and Ben Stephenson. Rachel Rusch Rich was an executive co-producer.
Last summer, HBO Max chose not to go ahead with another Bad Robot series, the Shining Overlook derivation series. Since then, the project has been launched on Netflix. It is unclear whether Demimonde would be bought from other buyers.
