US President Joe Biden has tested positive for COVID-19, again, in what the White House doctor described as a “rebound” case seen in a small percentage of patients taking the antiviral drug Paxlovid.
The 79-year-old president, who emerged from isolation on Wednesday after testing positive earlier this month, released a video on Saturday:
“Hi folks, Joe Biden here. He tested positive this morning. I’ll be working from home the next few days. And I’m fine, everything’s fine.”
Biden will return to strict isolation, according to the White House, and will cancel planned trips to his home in Wilmington and a work trip to Michigan.
Studies have shown that a small percentage of people taking Paxlovid, which is used to treat high-risk patients, will experience a relapse or rebound days after completing the five-day course of treatment.
The White House physician said there are no plans to restart treatment given Biden’s lack of symptoms.
