Joe Biden will provide advanced rockets in Ukraine

The United States will send more advanced rocket systems to Ukraine capable of traveling nearly 80 km, a senior US official confirmed.

It came after Ukraine assured the US that it would not use precision-guided ammunition against targets within Russia.

Ukraine will have a small number of the medium-range M142 (Himars) medium-range artillery rocket system, a senior Biden administration official said.

The system could launch a 48-mile (77 km) rocket, the official said. They are mounted on a truck and can carry a container with six rockets.

It can also fire a longer-range missile, the Army’s tactical missile system, with a range of about 190 miles, but the U.S. will not send them.

Ukraine had also called for the Rocket Multiple Launch System (MLRS), which can fire rockets hundreds of miles away.

A senior US official said: “At this time we decided not to provide longer-range ammunition, and we informed the Ukrainians.

“The range of ammunition with the Himars allows them to cover about 80 km. It gives them a bit of ammunition accuracy towards single targets.

“Ukrainians have assured us that they will not use this ammunition against targets on Russian territory.

“Given these guarantees, we are very confident that they will not.”
