Barilaro’s office will be based at the Australian consulate complex in New York, which the government has spent nearly $ 1 million on equipment.
Brown revealed Wednesday that the cabinet agreed to make ministerial appointments on Sept. 27. But when Commerce Minister Stuart Ayres took over the portfolio in October, he decided not to enact legislation to enact the change to the appointment process because he thought it would slow recruitment.
The decision to appoint Barilaro, who resigned from parliament on December 30, was not tabled in the cabinet, outraging Liberal ministers and MPs. Brown acknowledged that he had worried that Barilaro’s office “would feel they had veto rights” over the candidate he chose, before he was later asked to terminate West’s job offer.
When opposition leader in the upper house, Penny Sharpe, asked him if he knew if Barilaro had ever asked Ayres for a direct appointment to the post, Brown said, “I’m sure I have no knowledge.”
The hearing was told that Brown was in charge of calling West to tell him the offer would be retracted on Oct. 1, adding that the candidate was “extremely upset about it, it’s understandable.”
“The fact that we couldn’t name anyone for a period of time and the fact that she was very unhappy with the arrangements and the government, the whole situation felt pretty irreconcilable,” Brown said.
Brown said he had not “thought” about considering the cessation or suspension of Barilaro’s appointment, pending the outcome of the upper house investigation or review ordered by the prime minister.

“Given the short advance of today’s hearing, I’ve barely had a chance to think about it,” he said.
Brown told the hearing he later received a government decision instructing Investment NSW to begin preparing legislation to change the appointment process, but the process did not continue.
“We didn’t get that far … because the deputy prime minister resigned and the portfolio was reassigned to the minister [Stuart] Ayres, ”he said.
The Herald revealed Monday that West contacted the head of the department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Michael Coutts-Trotter, in January with concerns after his expected appointment was canceled.

Perrottet said Tuesday that Barilaro told him for the first time that he intended to apply for the position of U.S. trade commissioner in a “social environment” after the former deputy prime minister left parliament.
During the six months he held Barilaro accountable as Commerce Minister, Brown said he had an online meeting with him through Teams.
Brown said she was committed to the core values of public service and was confident she had fulfilled her duties in relation to Barilaro’s appointment.
