Junichi Masuda, one of the founders of Game Freak, the current managing director and longtime composer of the Pokémon series, among many other roles in the company, leaves his role of new pastures.
Masuda has been with Game Freak since it was formed in 1989, and has been the producer and director of many Pokémon games over the years. Today, however, he moves on to The Pokémon Company, where he will hold the title of Chief Creative Fellow, where he will use his knowledge of the series to help develop new services and products. It’s a move quite similar to that made by Shigeru Miyamoto, who became Nintendo’s Creative Fellow to help manage the brand and move away from game development.

The Pokémon Company is pleased to announce the appointment of Junichi Masuda as Creative Director, starting June 1, 2022.
Junichi Masuda has been the CEO of GAME FREAK Inc., the original creator of Pokémon, until May 31st. As one of the founding members of GAME FREAK, he participated in the development of “Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Green Version.” Supporting the development of the later Pokémon video game series for many years.
