Liverpool’s dreams of winning the quadruple last season were shattered on the final day as Man City took first place. His hopes of winning three trophies shattered after a 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp was a disappointment, however. He was shown a yellow card after 80 minutes for slicing down an opponent. “They scored a goal, we didn’t, that’s the easiest explanation in the world of football and it’s hard, hard to get anyway. [but we] in that regard, of course, “he said.
“I think Madrid shot at goal, right? And that was a goal. But look, I understand 100% and I respect 100% the reason to play football and have this kind of competition is to win the game, and whatever you do, as long as it’s in the rules, is allowed and you can do it.

“We also had to defend at times, only we blocked the shots or whatever. We played a good game, but when you lose 1-0 you have to admit that then it wasn’t good enough,” he added.
However, it was the 54-year-old man’s admission to the match that prompted Tottenham fans to question his comments. Thibaut Courtois made a great block, though.
This was a decision that clearly bothered Klopp. “When the goalkeeper is the man of the match, something is wrong with the other team,” said the Liverpool coach. “I think we had three very big occasions where [Thibaut] Courtois made incredible stops. I wish I had a few more of this caliber. “
What Klopp might have forgotten is what happened when Liverpool beat Tottenham in the Champions League final just three years earlier. The Spurs’ 2-0 defeat in Madrid shattered their hopes of ending their silver drought, with an early penalty from Mohamed Salah and a late goal from Divock Origi that earned them the title.
However, Tottenham dominated the proceedings after Salah’s goal, but could not find a way to beat Alisson Becker and Liverpool’s defense. Virgil van Dijk received the official UEFA Match Award, but several unofficial media named goalkeeper Alisson Becker as the man of the match, including Sky Sports and our Liverpool Echo friends. The Liverpool goalkeeper received this award for his solid display and there were no complaints from Klopp at the time, but when his team is on the losing side, the story is different.
Courtois deserved the award for his performance on Saturday and the problem for the 54-year-old was that his team could not get a ball into the bottom of the Belgian’s net. Klopp’s comments clearly indicated his high emotions after the defeat, but hopefully someone has reminded him of the time when his goalkeeper was named man of the match by many, after the Champions League final against Tottenham and the lack of complaints it caused.
