The Colorado Avalanche are poised to reach their full potential after a controversial, yet controversial, book that ends the fourth game of the Stanley Cup final.
After missing the first three games of the series in recovery from a surgically repaired thumb, Nazem Kadri scored in overtime in a partial breakaway to save the Avalanche in a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning, moving Colorado to a victory after an outing. the Stanley Cup.
Kadri’s magnificent and unlikely winner ruined a brilliant performance by Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy, who had so far thwarted an Avalanche-inspired effort with 35 stops in the game, including 10 in overtime.
It was Vasilevskiy’s only goal scored in a night when the avalanche had to look for other means. The Avalanche tied the game twice before Kadri gave his team its first and only advantage, with Nathan MacKinnon scoring his first goal of the series in a lucky deflection and Nico Sturm also using a lucky rebound to record the his first of the playoffs.
Vasilevsky’s counterpart Darcy Kuemper was also busy, making 37 stops. His only spots were with goals from Anthony Cirelli and Victor Hedman.
Kuemper also contributed offensively, moving the puck through the ice to gain a second assist to Kadri’s winner.
Which brings us to the controversy of which we were unaware until Jon Cooper briefly and emotionally met with reporters, before offering him a strange scare.
Lightning head coach promised in his session with the media that we will see evidence that the Bolts should have “still playing” once Kadri’s winner is reviewed under a more critical lens.
And while it’s not immediately clear, it would be said that after Kuemper pushed the puck back into the ice and ran into Kadri’s stick, an Avalanche player, MacKinnon, hadn’t completed his change.
According to the bill, Cooper, the former lawyer, has a valid spot with six Avalanche ice skaters, who own the puck. And for that reason, Lightning fans will be hurt by something they wouldn’t have noticed without Cooper’s theater, while Avalanche fans and most others will argue that the fact that MacKinnon didn’t jump above the boards really had nothing to do with the play.
The story goes on
After an even closer examination, it looked like the Lightning also had extras on the ice, as both teams worked to complete the changes.
It is worth noting all of Cooper’s later press, which included a long and dramatic preface before presenting his point.
Of what Cooper’s comments shouldn’t distract is the most important headline of the night, which is Kadri touching the high point of his personal redemption arc.
The hockey people had their hearts broken by Kadri when the talented striker, who was finally able to control his emotions in the post-season stage after several consecutive seasons of disappointing his teams with dirty and punishable plays, injured due to a reckless push by Evander Kane. the final of the Western Conference.
There was no promise that Kadri could fit into the NHL championship series, let alone contribute to a high level. And after a somewhat slow start to the game, and a clear postponement on his part while he had a presumably heavy protection on his thumb, it seemed that Kadri had not been able to give a boost.
Of course, Kadri’s Mikhail Sergachev was shown a yellow card for standing over the ball and blocking an opponent’s quick free kick after 80 minutes.
With Kadri back and the history of Tampa’s comeback with Brayden Point without bearing fruit, the Avalanche are clearly the coolest and most complete team.
And now they have three chances to win the first Stanley Cup in the franchise in 21 years, with the first coming Friday night in Denver.
