Kalvin Phillips will be a Manchester City player in time for the start of the pre-season as the club closes its second major signing of the summer.
City have already signed an agreement for the phenomenon of the Norwegian attack Erling Haaland, beating the strong competition of Real Madrid to sign the 21-year-old from Dortmund. And after agreeing a £ 45million deal with Leeds this week, City are expected to quickly complete a move for English international Phillips.
With the signing of Julian Alvarez in January also joining the first team squad, Pep Guardiola can welcome at least three new faces when the players communicate for the pre-season in early July. Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella is also still a target, as is goalkeeper Stefan Ortega on a free transfer.

Phillips’ arrival confirms City’s pull in the transfer market – United’s neighbor was one of the clubs the midfielder also wanted – and also increases the number of English players in the squad. Guardiola has signed John Stones, Kyle Walker and Jack Grealish during his six years at the Etihad, while inheriting Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden.
Sterling’s future remains uncertain with just one year to go before his current deal; the 27-year-old will decide in the next fortnight whether to sign a new agreement or look for a new challenge. By then, Gabriel Jesus is expected to have passed, as Arsenal are poised to buy City’s Brazilian striker in what will be one of history’s biggest player sales for the Blues.
City can expect to receive £ 5 million from Leeds for young midfielder Darko Gyabi this summer. The Yorkshire club have identified Gyabi as a future talent and are willing to buy him permanently now, although a number of clauses are expected to be inserted into the deal as is usual practice with City .
