When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle return to the UK for the Queen’s Jubilee, William and Kate have made a decisive decision.
It is not uncommon for William and Kate, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, to have a frank public assessment of their professional performance, but fortunately, that is why Welsh pensioners serve.
During the 2020 pandemic, the couple called bingo numbers for residents of a Cardiff residence via Zoom.
When they showed up in person three months later and met the same residents, they introduced themselves to 87-year-old Joan Drew-Smith, who wasted no time in telling the future king and queen what she thought of her bingo turn. .
“You did a shitty job,” he told William.
Joan was also a starter during that engagement when she pointed to Kate and asked, “Is she your assistant?”
Luckily, William and Kate thought it was all fun and, as she later said, “If everyone was as honest as she is.”
If only, in fact.
And “if only” when it comes to her return to Cardiff this weekend: it’s the same day that Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will meet the Queen and finally introduce her to her daughter and her homonymous Lilibet. . (Her three-year-old son Archie will be there, of course.)
The Sussex returned to the UK early Thursday morning, their first significant return to Harry’s homeland since his winter departure from the royal ranks in 2020. They traveled by, what else? – Private jet, landing at Farnborough Airport where they were greeted by one of Her Majesty’s Range Rovers and three of their protection officers to make the half-hour journey to their home, Frogmore Cottage. Of course, they have returned because Thursday (London time) is the first of four days of celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, which marks her historic 70th year on the throne. Take this Queen Victoria! The eternally austere monarch was only 63 years old, many of whom passed to Scotland without regard for duty.
The jubilee will begin with Trooping the Color, the Sovereign’s official birthday party, followed by a Thanksgiving service at St Paul’s on Friday, a concert at Buckingham Palace on Saturday night and a large popular parade on Sunday with more of 5,000 participants and an excess of puppets.
It was only a few weeks ago that Harry and Meghan finally announced that they would be attending the festivities, only a report came out stating that they were filming working on something called a “home” documentary series for Netflix. (What do you call a shovel in Montecito? A handmade earth extraction device?)
Although Harry and Meghan, now private citizens, will not appear in any official function, we will still see them again in the modest royal. For Trooping, it is reported that they will be ignominiously transported to Horse Guards Parade with other extended members of the royal family, instead of making the journey in the procession of the royal carriage as they did in 2019. There, they and several alien Windsors will watch the military show. from the next Office of the Major General.
Then, on Friday, the Duke and Duchess will be part of the vast sea of qualified relatives who will join Her Majesty at St Paul’s, including the pariah Prince Andrew, for a Thanksgiving service.
With an unspecified group of younger members of the royal family likely to be in the audience for Saturday’s conference, there’s a chance we’ll see Harry and Meghan as well. Ditto the hoo-haa Sunday parade.
But of course, this trip is so much more than giving Meghan a couple of chances to prove she can take hell with a fabulous hat that costs about as much as a used car. Oh no. This is also great in a strictly personal sense.
Harry’s relatives have not seen his son Archie since 2019 and baby Lili has never set foot on British soil.
Of course, in the intervening years, not only has his family grown, but Harry and Meghan have mutinied in the most spectacular way, breaking the royal ranks to explain to a global audience of 50 million people how racist and the Palace is institutionally cruel.
Not only was the Palace the focus of the Sussex during this interview, but so was Kate, with Meghan telling the world that her sister-in-law made her cry before her 2018 wedding. to mourn Kate, a subject which the Duchess of Cambridge has never spoken of publicly.)
It didn’t help that this charged situation that the duo said they “said, didn’t ask” to Her Majesty that they wanted to co-opt her lifelong nickname for her daughter.
Or to put it another way, it is the Dukes and Duchess of Sussex who are responsible for causing one of the greatest crises in modern royal history, and it is the Dukes and Duchess of Sussex who have now appeared. (at least in part) for crumpets and quality family time.
Thus we come to the very curious question of the time of the great family reunion which is, according to the sunready for saturday.
Instead of attending the Jubilee Day event (the Epsom Derby), the 96-year-old queen will enjoy a reunion with her beloved grandson and family.
Curiously, the day for Harry’s emotional return to the royal bosom is the same day that the rest of the members of the royal family will fly the flag of the monarchy across the country. (Princess Anne will go to Scotland on Friday and then on Saturday, the Cambridge will go to Wales, and Edward and Sophie, the Earl and Countess of Wessex will go to Northern Ireland.)
Was it just a matter of busy newspapers confronting each other, or something more calculated to explain why this years-long transatlantic family reunion was planned just as the Cambridges are far from Windsor?
To be fair, Saturday will be Lili’s first birthday, with plans for the child to enjoy a little party at Frogmore Cottage.
But do we seriously believe that the only window the courtiers could find on Her Majesty’s agenda for this emotional family reunion was exactly when William and Kate will be more than 200 miles away?
What is the likelihood, given the decidedly vinegar relationship between Cambridge and Sussex, that they may be planning some other meeting outside of the meeting scheduled for Saturday?
A few days ago the mirror reported that William and Harry have been sharing regular FaceTime calls to “reconnect,” but that “Meghan and Kate, both in their 40s, have so far avoided contact on the screen.”
Again, this would hardly suggest that there is some sort of cheerful afternoon tea full of jam dodgers for both couples.
Which leaves us with the possibility that Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lili may spend most of a week in the UK and not catch up with William and Kate and their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
It would be a shame for the five little ones, considering how close William and Harry are to their different cousins and how these relationships seem to have blossomed into adulthood. (They have, Mike Tindall once revealed, a WhatsApp group and all.)
With the start of the Jubilee, an event that includes horses, kids, mock-ups, thousands of artists, the military and Netflix’s top hires, the only thing left to say here is, lwc people, which is, of course , ‘good luck’ in Welsh. The queen, the horses and the children will need it.
