Sir Keir Starmer has not been fined by Durham police following an investigation into whether he breached the blocking rules.
In May, the Labor leader offered to resign if he was fined for drinking beer and eating curry while out of campaigning during last year’s local elections. After a two-month investigation he has been authorized and will not receive a fixed penalty notice. Angela Rayner, his deputy, was not fined either.
Starmer enjoyed a victory lap yesterday as he delivered a speech promising a “new beginning.” He said: “People told me I was taking risks saying I would give up if I was fined. But it was never about that. For me, it was a matter of principle. It shouldn’t be.
