Calgary Stampede parade marshal for 2022 will be Kevin Costner, officials announced Tuesday.
In a video message accompanying the press release, the winning actor and director of the Academy said he was honored to be chosen and noted that he has a personal connection to Calgary and Alberta.
“I have a lot of good memories of being in Calgary. It’s made a big difference in my life to do Open Range and Let Him Go there. It’s one of the most beautiful places,” he said.
“I will be there on July 8 and I feel very honored to be a part of what you have been doing for so long and to follow a tradition. See you at the Parade.”
Costner has starred in a long list of successful films and television series, including No Way Out, The Untouchables, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and Dances with Wolves, which won seven Academy Awards, including Best director for Costner.
Since 2018, she has played John Dutton, patriarch of the Dutton family, on the award-winning Yellowstone television show.
“A modern western, the show is filmed on the rolling hills and rocky mountains of Darby, Montana, which is reflected in Costner’s love of Western heritage and culture,” the Stampede said in a statement.
Costner is also a musician and he and his band, Modern West, will perform at The Big Four Roadhouse after their marshal duties on the night of July 8th.
The Calgary Stampede Parade begins at 9 a.m. Friday, July 8, with the prelude at 7:30 p.m.
