Lead and Mercury

The management of lead and mercury exposures in BC is a shared responsibility of the BCCDC, regional health authorities, and physicians.

In British Columbia, all publicly funded lead and mercury tests can be reported to the BCCDC. The BCCDC’s environmental health services, in cooperation with regional health authorities, monitor cases of lead and mercury elevation when necessary, and investigate unusual findings that may indicate a threat to public health.

The BCCDC also supports physicians in the management and research of lead and mercury exposures. The guide is included here in the attached documents. The Drug and Poison Information Center can also provide support and guidance to physicians who manage exposures to lead and mercury.

BCCDC studied the extent to which lead exposure to drinking water in BC nurseries and schools adversely affects children’s health and assessed the need and options available to reduce lead in drinking water. homes and schools.
