The Monegasque driver, who is fighting Max Verstappen for the F1 world title, had already prepared for a 10-place drop on the grid as a result of a new control electronics on Saturday.
However, during the final free practice on Saturday morning, the FIA announced that Leclerc will take on a number of new power unit components for the rest of the Montreal weekend.
The new internal combustion engine, turbo, MGU-H, MGU-K is enough to mean that Leclerc will start from the back row of the grille next to the AlphaTauri Yuki Tsunoda, which also has a new engine installed.
Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz has also taken on a new internal combustion unit, which is his third and final of the season so he is not subject to any sanctions.
Ferrari’s decision to give Leclerc a new engine for the Canadian GP comes after a series of two errors in the last three races.
He withdrew from the leadership in both the Spanish Grand Prix and Azerbaijan with problems with the power unit.
In Spain, the problem caused it to lose a turbo and an MGU-H, while the failure in Baku ensured that the power unit was irreparable.
The fact that Leclerc will move to his additional components at this stage of the year, allied to previous defeats, means that in addition to half of the season, he will probably have to make more penalties before the end of the campaign.
Although Leclerc has been disappointed with the recent drop in form, he says the promising pace of the car, which has been faster overall overall in a single lap, gives him encouragement for the future.

“We are aware of the pace in the car. So in that, we find confidence,” he told Motorsport.com.
“We know obviously reliability has been an issue in the last three races, but the performance is there. So we know that whenever we solve these problems, we will be there fighting with Red Bull for the championship.
“I’m confident with this team, because it’s giving 200% as usual, obviously, and I’m sure that once we fix our problems, we can get Red Bull back.”
