Several right-wing and Liberal commentators have urged the party to move further to the right and look away from its traditional seats in the city center to gain the favor of voters in the outer suburbs, calls that now appear to be Smith is echoing.

Opposition groups refused to respond to Smith’s comments on Sunday, citing recent comments by opposition leader Matthew Guy, who acknowledged the party was facing a tough battle inside Melbourne.

“Yes, we have clear issues in downtown areas,” Guy told The Age last week. “That’s true. But that’s not the whole state. Victoria is a segmented market, and I think what you’re seeing here is that it’s being played.”

Guy quickly clashed with Smith, his former ally with leadership aspirations, following his driving accident last year.

When asked on Sunday how he felt treated by the leader of the fall, Smith said, “My mother always taught me, ‘If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything.’

He then apologized and admitted that he had made a “grave mistake”.
