Day 1 concludes with Schwartzel in the lead
Charl Schwartzel closed out his first round with a bird to take a one-shot lead. Schwartzel is a former Masters champion and one of the 17 current or former members of the PGA Tour competing in this event. LIV events are 54 holes, so there are two rounds left.
Hennie Du Plessis shot 4 below and is only in second place, one behind.
DAY 1 COMPLETE LEADER
Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson teamed up, and shot evenly from under 69 to chase Schwartzel with four shots.
“Apart from a couple of loose units, I felt like I hit my irons really well. The golf course is tough and the conditions are very tough,” Johnson later told the show.

Who is Phachara Khongwatmai?
The 48-person course at the opening of LIV Golf has some players known to most golf enthusiasts, but many more than they probably aren’t.
One of the latter would be the leader at 4 below par with three holes for the Centurion Club, the Thai Phachara Khongwatmai. The 23-year-old is number 133 in the world and a regular on the Asian tour.
In 2013, at the age of 14, he became the youngest winner of a professional tournament when he won the Sing Hua Hin Open at the All Thailand Golf Tour. Three years later he played in the British Open at the age of 17, losing the cut.
The LIV Golf Invitational Series is sanctioned by the Asian Tour. LIV Golf Investments, launched last October with the idea of supporting golf worldwide, has pledged $ 300 million to the Asian Tour for a series of 10 events a year to help grow the tour. The Public Investment Fund, an autonomous equity fund administered by the government of Saudi Arabia, is a major shareholder in LIV Golf Investments.
There are three players from Thailand and three from Japan.
How the LIV show looks and sounds
As with any new league, a lot of curiosity surrounded where and how LIV Golf would be broadcast.
For the opening outside London, LIV Golf is broadcast on its own website, YouTube and Facebook. And it looks like … a golf tournament.
The presentation includes a leaderboard that is constantly updated on the left side of the screen, with the logos of the players and their teams. At the top left is the number of remaining holes, as with the start of a shotgun all players finish at about the same time.
U.S. golf fans complaining about broadcasts with too many commercial breaks take note: There are no sponsorship obligations with the new series this week, so no ads. During the broadcast of the opening round there were virtually no performances or other segments to get out of the gulf.
In terms of comments, the main stand features Premier League football broadcaster Arlo White, who is English, along with American Jerry Foltz, most recently from Golf Channel and Dom Boulet, a Hong Kong native , the voice of the Asian Tour.
Dustin Double Bogeys the 7th hole
Not all smiles at the Centurion Club. In the seventh hole par-4, Dustin Johnson went out of bounds to the right and threw his tee with disgust.

He made a double bogey in the hole to fall from 1 under to 1 in the round, tied for 15th place in the event.
Johnson plays alongside Phil Mickelson: LIV Golf put together his two most important names and started them on the first jersey, and Mickelson has also surpassed his first professional golf since the Saudi International in early February.
How the team format works
One of the main selling points of LIV Golf is its four-person team format. With 12 holes left in the round, as LIV keeps track of time given the start of the shotgun, the Crushers GC team led at 4 below.
Phachara Khongwatmai of Thailand was 4 below, leading the Crushers as well as the entire event.
The team’s score is calculated by the two best scores of a team during the first two rounds and the top three scores in the third and final round.
The top three teams win $ 5 million in prize money, with $ 3 million for the first, $ 1.5 million for the second, and $ 500,000 for the third deal between the four players. So in theory, a player could have a bad event but three good teammates and get a good payday.
So what do they bring?
If you’re just tuning in, you’ll notice that most players won’t look different from other tournaments. Dustin Johnson and Sergio Garcia, for example, are in their usual threads with the Adidas logo; Garcia wearing an Adidas hat and Johnson wearing a TaylorMade logo hat.
LIV golf teams of players are represented through the carts, which have the names and logos of the teams on the vests.
As for Phil Mickelson, who lost sponsors following his comments in February about the “nasty greed” of the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed league, he wears a black hat with his own Phil jumping logo and a black vest with Augusta. National Golf Club logo.

Dustin Johnson’s first shot went live on the broadcast and split the fairway. Phil Mickelson is teaming up with DJ, and he also hit the streets with his first shot at No. 1. And so begins a new golf league.

In the first moments of the webcast, Greg Norman joins the stand and says, “I’m excited to take the free agency to golf. The start of the shotgun is just minutes away.

A walk to the beginning of the shotgun
As anyone who has ever played at a charity golf tournament or major event at your local club knows, transportation to start a shotgun is a controlled mess. It usually involves an army of golf carts thrown at once from the clubhouse.
LIV Golf took it a step further by taking a fleet of black London taxis to transport players around the Centurion Club.
LIV Golf also released a drum video on Thursday, narrated by Dennis Quaid.
