Full time: The Socceroos face Peru

Australia’s full-time and hopes of reaching the Qatar 2022 World Cup remain firmly alive. A late goal from Ajdin Hrustic secures a 2-1 victory for the United Arab Emirates and secures the Socceroos’ place in the intercontinental play-off against Peru.

Defensive changes for the Socceroos

Two late changes for the Socceroos which, surprisingly, fall to the last five. Defender Milos Degenek replaces potential match winner Ajdin Hrustic, while striker Matt Leckie is replaced by winger Awer Mabil.

Australia holds

A great test now of the mentality of the Socceroos. The last time they advanced, it only lasted three minutes. It’s a do-it-yourselfer for the United Arab Emirates who are throwing numbers ahead in desperate attempts to tie and force that game into overtime.

Omar Abdulrahman, the exciting, talented, skilled and creative game creator of the Emirates, is finally on the field for a nervous final for Australia.

Hurustic’s sweet volley and the stroke of luck

Let’s look at it again. Again. And over and over and over again.

GOOOOOAAALLLL: HRUSTIC PUTS THE SOCCEROOS IN FRONT AGAIN

ENTER !!!! Ajdin Hrustic put the Socceroos ahead again with just six minutes to go. A stroke of luck but a touch of fortune that favored the brave. Hrustic neatly controlled the ball after a short corner, and knocked it on to Khalid Eisa who had the whole net open before him, but only managed to hit the post. The net.

That’s being huge. Australia are now 2-1 in the 84th minute.

Maclaren approaches

Khalied Eisa made a brilliant save against Jamie Maclaren. Another cunning buildup erodes the UAE’s defense, paving the way for Maclaren to shoot from an acute angle inside the box. The home keeper was stunned 27 minutes into the match when he misjudged the free kick by Eisa and dived in the wrong direction.

No sign of Abdulrahman

There are only 15 minutes left in regulation time and we have not yet seen the main creator of the United Arab Emirates game, Omar Abdulrahman. The blurry-haired offensive midfielder is one of the most gifted players in Asia and was a man the Socceroos would have targeted as the main threat. However, he is still on the bench and is not yet used by coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena.

Opportunities for Australia when Maclaren enters the track

Australia is moving forward now and seems more likely to take the lead. Kye Rowles made a great block, though. A corner kick from Khaled Eisa is followed by Ajdin Hrustic’s hard but accurate header.

Arnold is the first to use the bench, making a necessary change of attack incorporating Melbourne City striker Jamie Maclaren by Craig Goodwin, who missed this previous opportunity.

‘Bootsa’ not impressed

Clint Bolton, the former Socceroo and Sydney FC goalkeeper, is not impressed with what he is seeing.
