The NDP says voters in Northern Ontario’s Kiiwetinoong district are being redirected from polling stations.
NDP provincial director Lucy Watson on Thursday wrote a letter to Chief Electoral Officer Greg Essensa urging him to enforce a directive he issued earlier this week that allowed Kiiwetinoong voters to vote anywhere voting for staff issues.
“People who have the right to vote go to the polls and are rejected,” Erin Morrison, Ontario’s NDP communications director, told CTV News.
On Monday, Essensa invoked a law authorizing an extension of the special voting program to address issues such as flooding, staff shortages, COVID-19 outbreaks, and geographic barriers. “This is riding more than 50% indigenous people. It’s the only bicycle in the whole province that has more than 50% indigenous people,” Morrison said.
But voters were still turned down Thursday by election secretaries who said they had not heard of the directive, Watson said.
“Please contact your returning officer and all returning officers immediately so that they are immediately familiar with the Directive and allow unhindered access to the ballot box in accordance with the Directive,” Watson said.

The report on the results of 19 excursions across the province will be delayed by up to two hours, CTV News has learned. Electoral rules stipulate that all polls in a constituency must have completed voting before the results can be communicated. Therefore, the results of these excursions will be delayed.
Elections Ontario said earlier that opening hours were delayed at several polling stations in the province due to various circumstances, such as blackouts and fires.
6 p.m.
Elections Ontario says fires, sewer backups and power outages have delayed the opening of some polling stations. Voting hours are extended at these locations.
However, the organization says that “the polls are open and fully operational, and we are processing voters without difficulty.”
Most polling stations across the province will close in three hours.
