With years of experience at the highest levels of British civil service, including overseeing ethical government research, Sue Gray used to be considered one of the most powerful people the British had ever heard of.
But Mrs Gray was the focus of British politics on Wednesday after delivering her report at a party in Downing Street that violated British blockade rules.
After a lifetime of working on anonymity, this is an awkward position for Ms. Gray, who is now famous enough to be the subject of memes, poems, and YouTube videos.
Mrs. Gray has experience in solving thorny issues and has a reputation for being a skilled steel repairman. She has spent most of her career in government service, although she once took a break from running a pub in Northern Ireland with her husband, Bill Conlon, a country singer.
Later, Ms. Gray worked closely with Gus O’Donnell, a former head of the Civil Service. Because of the power of her position, as well as her initials, she was nicknamed “God” and, perhaps inevitably, Mrs. Gray was known as “Baby God.”
A former minister, David Laws, recalled in his memoirs that Oliver Letwin, a fellow minister, told him that it had taken him two years to realize who was really ruling Britain. According to this account, Mr. Letwin concluded that she was “a lady named Sue Gray,” adding that “unless she agrees, things just don’t work out.”
In 2017, Ms. Gray was responsible for a report on the conduct of Damian Green, a senior minister who resigned after his investigation found that he had misled the public about pornography found on his parliament’s computer.
Mrs. Gray inherited the consultation on the confinement parties of the current head of the civil service, Simon Case. Mr. Johnson asked Mr. He almost led what was then a much smaller investigation into the allegations late last year. Unfortunately, Mr. Case had to resign after the information that took place in his office.
Most analysts expected Ms. Gray acted very well and limited his conclusions to the facts he had established.
And now that he has issued his report, they hope he will gladly withdraw from the spotlight.
