MP Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) Acknowledged the possibility of a presidential candidacy in 2024 in an interview with ABC News on Sunday, but said she has not “yet made any decision on the matter.”
Why it matters: If he chooses to run, Cheney would join a rapidly forming 2024 Republican camp, dominated by former President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and former Vice President Mike Pence.
What they are saying is, “I will make a decision on the 24th in the future,” Cheney said.
- “I think about that less in terms of deciding to run for office, and more in terms of, you know, as an American, and as someone who is in a position of public trust now, like me. I assure you that I am doing everything I can to do the right thing, to do what I know is right for the country and to protect our Constitution, “he added.
The big picture: For now, Cheney said she remains focused on winning her next Wyoming primaries and her January 6 committee work.
- “The most important thing is to protect Donald Trump’s nation. And I think that matters to us more as Americans than anything else, and that’s why my work on the committee is so important,” he said.
- Cheney argued that the Republican party “cannot survive” if Trump is the Republican candidate in 2024.
- “Those of us who believe in Republican principles and ideals have a responsibility to try to bring the party back to what it can be, and to reject … so much toxin and vitriol.”
