“Looks like someone got up before putting it on the grill”

A father has spoken out after claiming that his daughter returned home dying of hunger because she refused to eat the “vile” school dinners offered at her high school. The father said he was surprised that the children at QE High, Carmarthen’s largest school, were expected to eat some of the food prepared and sold there.

School dinners, run by Carmarthenshire Council, cost £ 2.60 a day, but some say they don’t think they’re value for money. You can keep up to date with the latest Carmarthenshire news by signing up for the local newsletter here.

The father, who did not want to be named, said: “My daughter sent me a picture of her food at school. It was a potato jacket with cheese but it looked like it had been thrown on the plate. It’s been weeks. He says that the only food is the paninis, but when his year goes to lunch he doesn’t have much left. He has complained a few times before and now I have resorted to making him packed lunches every day. From what he taught me, the food looks sticky and like it’s off. Other parents have commented the same. My daughter came back from school hungry last week because she said the food was vile, so she eats me away from home and home when she comes back. “

This is not the first time that high school dinners in Carmarthenshire have received criticism. In March, lunches at Ysgol Dyffryn Taf in Whitland, 14 miles west of Carmarthen, were labeled “shocking” by parents, one of whom said, “That’s why my son is back. at home he was dying of hunger. He said the food was awful, but I never imagined it would be so bad! I seriously wonder if the food made him sick. ”

Following criticism, Ysgol Dyffryn Taf’s canteen was closed for two days so staff could “reconsider all aspects” of the food it offered students. As for the food at QE High, one person commented on a shared image on social media, saying, “I’d eat anything, but that’s not it. Poor child.” another said “it looks like someone stopped there before they put it on.”

The disgruntled mother of QE High, who said her daughter had never had any problems when she was in primary school in Carmarthen, said: “I don’t know if it’s school or a bigger problem in Carmarthenshire. I know if cooks need more training or what? But my daughter will have packed lunches in the foreseeable future. “

The Carmarthenshire Council said it would now look into concerns about the food standard at QE High. Board Education Director Gareth Morgans said: “Now that we are aware of this, we will look into this matter. If parents / guardians or students have any concerns about the level of nutrition in Carmarthenshire schools, we encourage them to contact schoolmeals@carmarthenshire.gov.uk “.
