Apple unveiled the first Mac with M2 this morning, officially opening pre-orders for the new 13-inch MacBook Pro. The launch, however, has been anything but smooth, as Apple is clearly battling major supply constraints.
In fact, all the settings for the new MacBook Pro M2 have already been booked until August. Naturally, this makes us wonder how this may affect the new MacBook Air that will be launched next month …
M2 MacBook delays
Apple has opened pre-orders for the new MacBook Pro M2 this morning at 5 am PT / 8 am ET. Things started badly, as for the first few hours, Apple only accepted pre-orders for the base model. Any custom MacBook Pro settings were listed as “currently unavailable”.
Since then, Apple has opened up pre-orders for custom M2 MacBook Pro configurations, allowing users to specify the machine with up to 24GB of memory and 2TB of SSD storage. However, making these changes will likely delay delivery of your new MacBook Pro in late July or early August.
The only two MacBook Pro models you can get with the June 24th launch date delivery are the options with 8GB of memory and 256GB or 512GB of storage. All other configurations are distributed from the first week of July to the second week of August.
What does this mean for the MacBook Air M2?
The all-new MacBook Air M2 is set to launch in July. Apple has not announced an exact release date, so it could be that pre-orders for the new MacBook Air do not begin until the last week of July.
What’s worrying is that the MacBook Pro M2 is likely to have less demand than the MacBook Air M2. This makes it seem like the MacBook Air will be hard to come by and may only be available in the base model settings.
It’s not clear what exactly the bottleneck is in MacBook Pro production, but the M2 chip doesn’t seem to be to blame. Instead, it seems to have something to do with higher-capacity unified memory and storage components.
Personally, I plan to buy the new MacBook Air next month, but it seems more and more that it will be an incredibly difficult machine to get. Combine the current supply chain issues and the completely new design of the MacBook Air with its popularity, and it could be months before the machine is available.
