Boris Johnson has rejected President Macron’s plan to return the United Kingdom to a European political community and has proposed an alternative in the style of the Roman Empire.
The prime minister told the French president he was not interested in “inventing new structures” and wanted to focus on more flexible relations between countries.
North Africa and Turkey should be part of a broader effort to “recreate the Mare Nostrum of the Roman Empire,” Johnson said during an unexpectedly cordial meeting this week.
During the meeting at the G7, Macron proposed that Britain become a member of a new “European political community” that he proposed as a more agile decision-making structure for the continent. French officials said Johnson was “very excited” about the idea.
