A gunman is still loose after a “targeted attack” on a busy Melbourne street.
A gunman is still at large after a deadly shooting on a busy Melbourne street in broad daylight on Tuesday.
A 55-year-old man was found with life-threatening injuries in Fitzroy at 4.15pm on Tuesday.
Police believe the shooting took place after an altercation with two people inside a vehicle parked on Fitzroy’s Brunswick St around 4 p.m.
The man was shot in the back as he got out of the vehicle.
Superintendent Paul O’Halloran said Victoria police were still looking for the alleged shooter.
Passers-by called the triple-0 after seeing the man lying on the street with life-threatening injuries.
Ambulance crews attended to the man, but he died at the scene. He has not yet been formally identified, but is believed to be about 50 years old.
Police say those involved in the incident knew each other.
Detective Superintendent of the Crimes Division, Paul O’Halloran, said it appeared the attack was not random.
“It looks like the man got out of the commission floors in Brunswick and went for a walk to a dark-colored Audi sedan,” he said.
“We believe there were two people in that vehicle and it looks like the man knew the occupants.
“Then the man left and was shot when he got out of the vehicle. There has been some dispute, we don’t know why or why.”
Police have not located the vehicle involved in the incident.
The incident is not believed to be related to the recent gang shootings, as the dead man has no known links to illegal motorcycles or criminal organizations in the Middle East, police said.
“Detectives are still working to determine the exact circumstances of the incident, but at this stage it appears to be a specific incident, with the parties involved possibly known to each other,” police said in a statement.
The area has been cordoned off and the crime scene has been established.
Police are calling for anyone who has witnessed the incident or has images from the dashboard to show up.
