Although Super Smash Bros. Ultimate “finished” with the release of the last Fighters Pass character, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, it still didn’t feel “finished” to us. That’s because Masahiro Sakurai, himself Mr. Smash Bros., has continued a long tradition of releasing a new screenshot of the game every day.
We are the envy of almost everyone as Sakurai managed to capture characters, locations and moments in such a perfect way that he truly understands the characters. In fact, seeing these screenshots every day has brought us a little bit of happiness and envy. But it looks like that tradition might be coming to an end soon, as Sakurai has admitted on Twitter that he’s almost run out of screens!
Calling it a “workplace ritual,” the Smash Bros. series director admits he even took 200 more “as we were wrapping up development,” meaning it’s been a while since saved some!
With today’s announcement, Sakurai shared his next shot: one of Wii Fit Trainer in Flat Zone X bouncing on Fire’s life web.
Posting daily Smash Ultimate screenshots has been a part of my work ritual for a while now…but it looks like I’ll be done with it in August.

Sakurai hasn’t specified how many screens he has left, but it has to be less than 30 if we’re selling out this month.
Fans have taken to Twitter to mourn the end of this tradition and also thank Sakurai for continuing to share screenshots of the game. Photos regularly rack up thousands of likes and retweets on the platform, so it will be strange not to see them on our timeline every day. But Sakurai deserves a break, for sure.
