Call it the Salter Sinkhole or the pope of all sinkholes.
A large crater has opened up in the middle of a busy intersection in north Winnipeg, forcing the closure of a section of Salter Street.
Northbound and southbound lanes are closed where Salter Street meets Inkster Boulevard in the area of ββSt. John’s of the city. Inkster was open Thursday afternoon, but the middle lanes in both directions are expected to be closed sometime Thursday or Friday.
“Our crews have investigated and the sink hole was likely caused by a culvert failure at the fence located at the intersection of Salter Street and Inkster Boulevard,” said Lisa Marquardson, spokeswoman for the water and waste department from Winnipeg.
Repair work has begun and is expected to take up to a month, it said in an emailed statement.

Winnipeg police initially tweeted Wednesday night that the entire intersection was closed due to a “massive sinkhole.”
Barricades have since been erected to allow traffic to flow through Inkster.
