Edwin chimes in: “I think Ferrari should hire a strategist. This is getting embarrassing.”
It could be some choice words of Charles Leclerc. It was his fault last week, but nothing like his this week.
“Who would have believed it when we woke up this morning,” says a jubilant Verstappen. “Up there with the best,” says Red Bull leader Christian Horner.
“Good job guys,” says Lewis Hamilton. “Sorry about the tires,” says Russell. “Great job Lewis.”
Max Verstappen wins the Hungarian Grand Prix!
The gap starts to close, but the Red Bull comes home in the rain. The world champion can ease it at home, ahead of Lewis Hamilton, and with George Russell making another Mercedes 2-3. Sainz arrives fourth, Pérez fifth and Leclerc, a painful sixth. Norris was seventh, Alonso eighth, Ocon ninth and Vettel, the old man, tenth.
69/70 That virtual safety car has rather drawn a veil over the race. A full safety car might have seen some change from the situation in Abu Dhabi. The green flag waves and there are a couple of laps left in the wet.

68/70 The aforementioned Valtteri Bottas, with his Alfa, leaves the track, and waves a yellow flag. A virtual safety car turns on. Decisions, decisions, about tires? Will the rain come now?
67/70 The lead is 10/6 seconds for Verstappen over Hamilton. Red Bull have done themselves a favor by the resurgence of Mercedes cars during the races.
66/70 Ferrari, unfortunately, are fourth and sixth, with former leader Leclerc sixth. Verstappen, who started tenth, looks on course for victory.
Hamilton overtakes Russell to take second place!
65/70 Hamilton passes on the first lap, and now Verstappen is in his sights. The distance is 11 seconds. Can a bridge be made?
64/70 Russell doesn’t seem willing to give up his place, and Valtteri Bottas, the former Mercedes driver, gets in the way for a while. The race is one for second and third, when Hamilton would have been expected to take the honours.

Hamilton overtakes Sainz for third!
62/70 The Mercedes shows the most grip, and has half the straight left when it passes.

61/70 DRS is imminent between Hamilton and Sainz as they head into the main straight at a track the Briton has won eight times. Sainz tries to keep the inside line.
60/70 Pérez, fifth, is between Leclerc and Hamilton, who takes the top three. Sainz complains that the front is getting away from him. They tell him to stay until the end.
59/70 Rain spots on the cameras, as Hamilton gets closer and closer to Sainz. Once he gets there. Russell will probably step aside as he has a different strategy.
58/70 Another fastest lap from Hamilton, this is old school stuff, and the chase is on for Verstappen. It’s all in the Red Bull tires to hold up. They are 11 laps older than the Mercedes.
57/70 Hamilton sets another fastest lap, he is 1.4 seconds faster than Sainz. Mercedes to two cars on the podium for the second race in a row.
56/70 Russell is nearly nine seconds off Verstappen, and the big race is now Hamilton coming in for Sainz to take third. The warning is for a brief and light shower.
55/70 Leclerc is summoned for a third pit stop? What was the point of those hard tires? Leclerc is sixth, behind Pérez, and with Hamilton on the fastest lap. Ferrari has boxed it.

Verstappen takes the lead after Hamilton pits
52/70 Leclerc holds off the Mercedes on the second lap, and they stay close, Russell being held back by defensive moves. Hamilton pits and drops to fifth, with Verstappen now in the lead.
51/70 Mercedes pending a safety car? This would put Lewis Hamilton in a decent position to win the race. Meanwhile, Russell chases Leclerc, the Ferrari’s hard tires continuing to be a problem. This is the race for third.
50/70 Pasadeja overtakes Ricciardo in the middle of the field. Ricciardo is handed a five-second penalty despite his protestations of innocence earlier.
49/70 Hamilton is in the lead and has 5.5 seconds on Verstappen, although a pit to come. Verstappen looks best placed to take the win.

Enter Sainz 48/70 and it’s another Ferrari mare, and 4.8 seconds. Sainz enters the field in fifth place. Back in the field, Ricciardo and Stroll face off. “I gave him a lot of space,” says Ricciardo. This is the battle for 11 and 12.
47/70 Russell, the former pole position, is showing better speed than Leclerc. Ferrari tells Leclerc hard tires are the right choice. Let’s see what he says next.
46/70 Ferrari’s hopes now are that Sainz has a decent chest and holds off Verstappen. Hamilton has yet to pit for a second time at Mercedes.
Verstappen overtakes Leclerc again!
45/70 Why Leclerc used hard tires is a mystery. Verstappen gets back in front of him, on the inside, using top drive.
44/70 Verstappen does his best to get back at Leclerc, although Ferrari tries a defensive effort. If the Red Bull flies again, this mistake seems to have done little damage.

Verstappen’s mistake!
42/70 Verstappen loses it, and Lelclerc passes! The Red Bull slides into the chicane and Leclerc overtakes it and returns to third. Russell takes the opportunity to overtake Pérez. Everything is happening. Redemption for Ferrari?
Verstappen beats Leclerc!
41/70 Another Ferrari dud? Verstappen’s medium tires beat Leclerc on the hard tires.

Leclerc overtakes Russell and takes the lead!
31/70 Finally, the door opens, and Leclerc breaks through Russell’s defenses, spinning around the other side before, and the Ferrari moves forward. Great driving by both. Russell’s job now is to hold off Sainz and Verstappen.
30/70 In this final stretch, the DRS opens up again and Russell continues to hold off his rival. Leclerc has the younger tires and may choose to bide his time.
29/70 Leclerc chases Russell, and another gap opens up, only to be closed once again. Just five seconds into the top four, Hamilton dropped off that pace.
Leclerc catches Russell to lead!
28/70 Russell opens the door, and Leclerc looks to go through, but great defensive work from Russell closes the door again. This showed Russell’s talent. Not this time.

27/70 Russell seems to be losing a bit of time, and maybe struggling with his tyres, as Hamilton seems to be. Leclerc is starting, Sainz a buffer between him and Verstappen.
26/70 Leclerc closing in on Russell, gap now under a second, DRS specter rising. Great test for the youngster.
25/70 Hamilton’s brakes locked up, just as he was setting up a fast opening sector. The Ferrari team says the race is “tough on the tires”.
24/70 Leclerc sets the fastest lap as Verstappen gets angry after Sainz. Soon we can see a battle of Verstappen and Leclerc, as has been usual this season. Then the Alpins of Ocon and Alonso get tangled up, and Ricciardo comes in, reading his move, and in tenth. There is bad blood in the Alpine team.
23/70 Leclerc is warned by his team not to remove the balls from the tyres. He is the type of driver that requires this warning.
22/70 Russell gets ahead of Leclerc, but Leclerc will race ahead of Sainz. This is the result of the speed of Leclerc and a rather failed chest for Sainz. Alonso went with the hard tire, which gives a guide to everyone else.

21/70 Verstappen makes his way through the field and goes fourth after passing the Alpine cars of Alonso and Ocon. Leclerc bites, and goes to the media.
20/70 Hamilton enters and drops to seventh. Russell is second, and only Leclerc of the leaders to enter. Sainz and Leclerc seem to be the race to watch out for, later on chests permitting.
19/70 Pérez enters, from third, as Russell sets the fastest lap and takes third. Leclerc flies up…
