The new Mercedes-AMG E63 Final Edition closes production of Affalterbach’s pure combustion V8 sports sedans.
It has been revealed as a result of two concept cars that foresaw the electrified future of the Mercedes performance division: the extravagant Vision AMG and a prototype for the next generation Mercedes-AMG C63 PHEV. The E63 Final Edition serves as the swan song for the firm’s pure combustion sports sedans, a lineage that dates back to the E-Class “Hammer” of the 1986 W124 generation, then the fastest sedan in the world.
The V8 engine will continue to play a role in the future of AMG: it is still available in the 4-door Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé, produces about 577 hp in the most popular version of the new SL and is used in a plug-in hybrid system of 819 CV. in the new GT 63 S E-Performance, but is to be replaced by a four-cylinder electrified unit in the upcoming E63.
When it arrives, probably in 2024, the next-generation E63 is designed to use a variant of the same PHEV system for its smaller C63 sibling. Officially detailed last week, this configuration includes a 2.0-liter 470 hp petrol engine, the most powerful four-cylinder in series production, and a 201-hp electric motor on the rear axle for a total power of 670 CV.
If this PHEV transmission is shipped in bulk to the next E63, it will give you a 77 hp advantage over the current V8 car and could allow you to improve your 0-62 mph time by 3.5 seconds and your top speed at 180 mph.
But for now, in the form of the final edition, the E63 soldiers face the thickness of eight cylinders, sending 603 hp and 627 pound feet to both axles using an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Only 999 examples of the finished model will be produced, marked by the standard car with custom matte gray paint and a set of distinctive black stickers, combined with black wheels, badges, exhaust pipes and exterior elements.
