Met Office issues new storm warning for Dorset

TRO, lightning and flooding could be seen in Dorset later today.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for parts of the country, including Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and the rest of Dorset.

The notice will be valid tomorrow (Sunday 5), between 24h and 18h.

Some places could see 15-20mm of rain in an hour, maybe up to 50mm before the storms fade, and hail may affect some points, the Met Office said.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Storms and rain are expected to develop in parts of England and Wales during the early hours of Sunday.

“There are likely to be torrential downpours in some parts with parts of the Midlands, East Anglia and the south east of England most at risk.

“Some places could see 15-20 mm in an hour, and maybe up to 50 mm before storms fade, and hail may affect some points.

“These storms will slowly spread to the south of the north of England on Sunday morning before they subside.

“Further south, drier conditions develop briefly on Sunday morning before more showers and storms develop in parts of the south of England, Wales, the Midlands and East Anglia later.

“These can give some heavy showers with possible 10-20mm more in some places.”

As for what to expect, the Met Office says:

  • Water may flow quickly or flood deep, life-threatening, and some communities may be cut off if roads were flooded.
  • Home and business flooding can occur quickly, with damage to some buildings from flooding, lightning, hail, or strong winds.
  • When there are floods or lightning, there are chances of delays and some cancellations of train and bus services.
  • Sudden showers and flooding can lead to difficult driving conditions and some roadblocks.
  • Power outages and other services could be lost to some homes and businesses
