Michael Vaughan: The former England captain withdraws from his comment on the BBC

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has decided to quit his job at the BBC amid the “ongoing dialogue” around Yorkshire racism research.

Vaughan posted a statement on his Twitter account explaining why he thought it was best to temporarily retire from the BBC role.

Vaughan said: “On numerous occasions, I have recorded my views on YCCC-related issues.

“It is always unfortunate when comments on off – field issues shift the focus of what is happening on the field.

“Given the ongoing dialogue on the issue, I have so far made the decision to withdraw from my work with the BBC.

“The key driver of this is my concern for the well-being of my family members and my desire to protect their family life.

“Taking a step back temporarily is also in the interest of the game and I hope it minimizes any difficulties for my co-workers.”

Vaughan did not take part in BBC Ashes coverage in November last year following allegations of racism by Azeem Rafiq, who claimed the former England boss told a group of Muslim players in 2009 that “you were too much, we have to do something about it. that.”

Earlier this month, Yorkshire and “a number of individuals” were indicted by the Cricket Board of England and Wales following an investigation into allegations of historic racism.

Vaughan has not been named among the defendants and denies all charges.

The 47-year-old returned to special BBC Test Match coverage for England’s three-match series against New Zealand.

The BBC acknowledged that staff had “raised concerns” after an internal diversity group criticized the former Yorkshire striker for resuming commentary work.

Following Vaughan’s announcement, the BBC said in a statement: “After talks with Michael Vaughan, we have accepted his decision to move away from our cricket coverage.

“This is a decision we respect and understand. Michael is still under contract with the BBC.”
