For the new Surface Laptop Go 2 announced on Wednesday, Microsoft did not change much compared to the original that debuted in 2020. It is still an attractive, cheap, small, thin and light laptop built around a touch screen 12.4 inches with a high aspect ratio of 3: 2 and a resolution of 1,536 x 1,024 pixels.
Inside, Microsoft upgraded the processor to an eleventh-generation Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor that, while not the latest, should deliver that capable performance for school or business foundations. The consumer version can be configured with 4 GB or 8 GB of memory (which is on board, so it cannot be increased later), while the business model will go up to 16 GB of RAM. Solid state storage options are 128 GB or 256 GB; the 2020 model started with just a 64GB SSD.

The Go 2 will not have the components for high-end gaming, but cloud games with Xbox Game Pass will work.

The base model Surface Laptop Go 2 starts at $ 600 (£ 529, A $ 1,199) from Microsoft with the Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. As good as it sounds, 4GB of memory isn’t great for a $ 600 laptop. Increasing it to 8 GB will add $ 100 to the cost. As with the 2020 base model, the new base model does not include a fingerprint reader on the power button. And while Microsoft said it has improved the webcam, it’s still 720p instead of the 1080p cameras found in many new ultraportables.
Also, while it’s not uncommon for a cheap laptop to have a couple of upgradeable or replaceable parts, Microsoft made many of its parts user-replaceable, such as the screen, keyboard, and touchpad. solid state storage and SurfLink cable and battery, which may also be replaced by Microsoft or a service provider. One of the few things that can’t be replaced is RAM.
If you’re looking for something slim and small with a premium design for $ 600 or less, and you don’t want a Chromebook, this may be a good place to start.
