Now that Top Gun: Maverick is finally in theaters, the Microsoft Flight Simulator expansion is also being released. Microsoft and Asobo Studio have released a free add-on to promote the Tom Cruise movie and give you a taste of U.S. Navy flight training. You’ll get a “Maverick Edition” decoration for the F / A-18E Super Hornet fighter jet, but you’ll also learn to land in an aircraft carrier, perform combat maneuvers, and navigate difficult terrain at low altitudes.
There is also a more fantastic element. You’ll fly a fictional hypersonic plane from the movie, the Darkstar, that can push Mach 10 and soar above 150,000 feet; by context, even the SR-71 Blackbird failed to achieve sustained flight beyond 85,000 feet. This could be the closest you get to seeing the Earth from the stratosphere, not to mention traveling at speeds that make flights between continents seem trivial.
Both the movie and the game’s add-on have taken a long time to arrive. Top Gun: Maverick was originally scheduled to debut in July 2019, but the combination of the filming of the action sequence and the COVID-19 pandemic pushed it back several times until Paramount was established with the release. of May 27th. Because the expansion of Flight Simulator was closely tied to the movie, Microsoft and Asobo delayed the game’s content from November 2021 until this month. It’s safe to say that both of you will feel defeated if you’ve never wanted to venture beyond the confines of the usual Flight Sim civilian plane.
