Milk from Down Under: Australian company gets approval to ship baby formula to US

Carr said she was proud of the “substantial agreement” reached with the Biden administration, and described it as “a turning point for Australia”.

“We were actually the first infant formula manufacturer in the world to submit our application to the FDA under this new discretionary formula for applying infant formulas,” he said. “This was a very unique opportunity.”

Carr said Bubs Australia already distributes formulas for young children in the US, meaning the company had already gone through many of the rigorous regulatory processes needed to export products to the US. He said otherwise it would have taken up to three years to get FDA approval.

The U.S. infant formula crisis evolved after a major manufacturing facility in Michigan closed in February following reports of rare bacterial Cronobacter sakazakii infections in four babies, worsening a shortage that began with Pandemic Supply Chain Problems

“This week, we are seeing reports of up to 70 percent of brands out of stock [in the US]”This is something that the Biden administration and the FDA are taking very, very seriously and are withdrawing all measures so that they can rectify the situation very quickly.”

If babies are not breastfed, their only source of nutrition during the first four or six months of life is the formula they consume.

“Not being able to access it has caused an incredible wave of alarm among families [in the US]”As you can imagine,” said Carr. “I think this is a very important time for a clean and safe Australian food manufacturer and [has a] a reliable supply chain to be able to increase and help alleviate some of these shortcomings. “

However, the United States has not been the only country facing extreme scarcity. In 2018 and 2019, Australian parents struggled to buy formula with fears that the products would be bought and sold for profit abroad, especially in China. Some large supermarket chains put limits on the purchase of the product, causing difficulties for families with multiple babies.

Some Australian parents still have difficulty accessing the right formula for their children, especially those with allergies or digestive sensitivities.

In March, Novalac Allergy Infant Formula was out of stock for eight weeks. Aptimal Allepro Syneo Stage 1, a formula for babies with cow’s milk protein allergy, ran out from January until supply began to return to normal in April.

But Bubs Australia has promised that redirecting the baby formula will not affect supply levels in Australia, saying it has the ability to triple production at the Dandenong plant to meet formula export demand.

Carr said Australia experienced some problems with supply chains, as did all industries during the COVID-19 pandemic, but not the kind of crisis the US was facing.

“Bubs has had no supply issues to service the Australian market,” Carr said. “We have a strong inventory forecast and coverage for our Australian retail customers and other export markets, and this will remain unchanged.”

After seeing President Biden’s tweet, Carr said it was a “charming surprise,” but he was also aware of the importance it had for Biden and his administration to alleviate the shortage.

“I’ve been in the Washington time zone for over a week. Many of my team members have been with me until the evenings and weekends to go through this process. It goes to the top because it’s such a big deal. “.
