Millions of people eligible for free flu shots today

Pharmacists have already seen a strong response to a national flu-free vaccination initiative.

As of today, millions will have access to the vaccine in most parts of Australia, in an attempt to fight a growing wave of infections after the blockade.

Southwestern Sydney pharmacist Natalie Isaac told Today that her phones had been “hot” since the NSW government made the announcement last month.

“We already have a waiting list of people who want to get the flu for free. It’s going to be a busy day,” Natalie told Today.

Natalie told pharmacists that she has been told there will be no supply problems with the flu vaccine and encouraged everyone to show up to get the vaccine as soon as possible.

“I don’t think the flu virus has been a priority for the last two years, but we’ve seen the flu virus get to its peak at the beginning of the season,” he said.

“The flu virus can cause complications that can put people in emergency rooms, so get vaccinated for the flu and protect your family.”

The flu shot will be free throughout the month of June for people aged five and over in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

Tasmania, ACT and the Northern Territory are the only jurisdictions where the flu vaccine is not free for everyone.

In the ACT and Top End, the flu shot is free for vulnerable groups, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander natives, young children, pregnant women, and anyone over the age of 65.
