Today is August 2nd, which means we will officially hit the MLB trade deadline at 6pm tonight. As expected, there was a flurry of trades across the league yesterday and some bigger names are likely to be on the move today.
The Red Sox have already made a number of moves, parting ways with longtime catcher Christian Vazquez and LHP Jake Diekman in separate deals yesterday, and acquiring outfielder Tommy Pham from the Reds.
Baseball boss Chaim Bloom likely isn’t done making moves, as DH JD Martinez has been a popular name on the trade market. RHP Nathan Eovaldi, who pitched 6.1 strong innings last night, is also a candidate to be moved in the next few hours.
3:45 p.m.: David Robertson heads to the Phillies
Cubs reliever David Robertson was traded to the Phillies in a move that will bolster Philadelphia’s bullpen. Robertson, 37, has been in the majors since 2008 and was having a strong first season in Chicago. He had posted a 2.23 ERA with 14 saves in 40.1 innings.
Returning to Chicago is RHP Ben Brown, who was ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the Phillies’ system, according to Baseball America.
3:40 p.m.: Minnesota acquires Tyler Mahle from the Reds
The Twins made a move to pick up a starter, sending three minor leaguers to the Reds for RHP Tyler Mahle. In 19 starts this season, Mahle has a 4.40 ERA with 114 strikeouts in 104.1 innings.
In exchange, the Reds received prospects INF Spencer Steer, 3B Christian Encarnacion-Strand and LHP Steven Hajjar.
2:50 p.m.: Joey Gallo is traded to the Dodgers
Per Pat Ragazzo of SI, Yankees OF Joey Gallo has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Gallo had struggled mightily during his time with the Yankees, hitting just .159 with 25 home runs and 46 RBI over parts of two seasons. However, the Dodgers have decided to take a chance on him in hopes that he can return to the 40+ home run hitter he was with the Texas Rangers.
The Dodgers sent RHP Clayton Beeter to the Yankees in exchange.
2:20 p.m.: Eric Hosmer is headed to Boston
After Eric Hosmer turned down a move to Washington as part of the Juan Soto deal, it looks like the Padres have found him a new home. Hosmer has been traded to the Boston Red Sox, according to Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Hosmer won a World Series with the Royals in 2015 and was an All-Star in 2016. Although his power numbers have dipped over the past few seasons, he should be a contributor on a team that desperately needs help at first base.
The veteran first baseman’s return is not yet known.
1:40 p.m.: The Blue Jays add a pair of relievers
The Blue Jays are receiving right-handed relievers Anthony Bass and Zach Pop from the Marlins, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported. Bass has a 1.41 ERA in 45 plate appearances this season, while Pop has a 3.60 ERA in 18 plate appearances.
The Marlins will have shortstop Jordan Groshans, who was ranked No. 74 among MLB.com’s top 100 prospects entering the season.
11:50 a.m.: Juan Soto will go to the Parents
The great thing is done.
Juan Soto, along with Josh Bell, will go to the Padres in a trade that sends multiple players to the Nationals, according to multiple reports. Washington will get back two of San Diego’s top prospects, OF James Wood and OF Robert Hassell III, prospect pitcher Jarlin Susana along with young shortstop CJ Abrams and pitcher MacKenzie Gore.
Eric Hosmer will also go to the Nationals in the deal.
11:30 a.m.: Pares emerges as Juan Soto’s favorite
Nationals star outfielder Juan Soto is the top prize on the market before the trade deadline. It looks like the Padres are the first to get him, should he be traded.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that the Padres are close to landing Soto. First baseman Josh Bell could also be included in the trade, according to Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post.
10:45 a.m.: Orioles send closer to Twins
In the first move on Tuesday, the Minnesota Twins acquired All-Star RHP Jorge Lopez from Baltimore in exchange for four prospects.
After struggling for years to catch on in the majors, Lopez had excelled as Baltimore’s closer this season, posting a 1.68 ERA while collecting 19 saves.
Minnesota sent RHPs Yennier Cano and Juan Nuñez and LHPs Cade Povich and Juan Rojas to Baltimore in the deal.
Between that trade and the sending of Trey Mancini to the Astros, the Orioles, who are just ahead of the Red Sox in the standings, appear to be on the verge of a playoff push in 2022.
Here’s a list of the highlights so far:
Andrew Benintendi to the Yankees
The Kansas City Royals traded OF Andrew Benintendi to the Yankees last week as New York looks to bolster its roster in anticipation of a World Series. Benintendi, who played for the Red Sox from 2016-2020, is hitting .311 with 3 home runs and 41 RBI this year.
In exchange, the Yankees sent prospects RHP Chandler Champlain, LHP TJ Sikkema and RHP Beck Way to Kansas City.

Josh Hader at the Parents
In a somewhat surprising move, the San Diego Padres acquired Brewers closer Josh Hader in exchange for four players, including closer Taylor Rogers and RHP Dinelson Lamet.
Hader, one of the game’s most dominant closers and the current saves leader with 29, has struggled of late, posting a 9.45 ERA over his last 15 appearances spanning 13.1 innings. However, Hader’s track record shows that San Diego acquired a top pick to secure the back end of their bullpen.
The Padres sent LHP Taylor Rogers, who by the way is second in the MLB with 28 saves, as well as RHP Dinelson Lamet, OF prospect Esteury Ruiz (who has seen some time in the majors this year) and LHP prospect Robert Gasser in Milwaukee.
Frankie Montas to the Yankees
The Yankees continued to add to their roster, acquiring RHPs Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino from the Oakland A’s. Montas, along with Luis Castillo, was one of the best starters on the market and has had a solid season with a 3.18 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 104.1 innings.
Trivino, who had been serving as the A’s closer, has struggled this year, posting a 6.47 ERA in 32 innings. However, he was much better last season, collecting 22 saves and posting a 3.18 ERA in 73.2 innings.
The Yankees sent four players to Oakland in the trade: LHP JP Sears, who has pitched 22 innings for the club this year, No. 5 prospect LHP Ken Waldichuk, RHP prospect Luis Medina and 2B prospect Cooper Bowman.
Trey Mancini to the Astros
The Orioles traded 2021 AL Comeback Player of the Year OF/1B Trey Mancini to the Astros in a three-team deal that included the Tampa Bay Rays. Mancini, who missed the 2020 season while battling cancer, has been a solid contributor for years in Baltimore, hitting .268 with 10 homers and 41 RBI this year.
As part of the deal, Houston also acquired RHP prospect Jayden Murray from Tampa. RHP prospect Seth Johnson went from Tampa to Baltimore, and another RHP prospect, Chayce McDermott, went from Houston to Baltimore. The Astros also sent OF Jose Siri, who has seen time in the majors the last two seasons, to the Rays.
Christian Vázquez to the Astros
Just before the Red Sox game in Houston last night, longtime catcher Christian Vazquez was traded to the Astros. Vazquez had been in the Red Sox system his entire career, and had been with the big league club since 2014. He’s having the best offensive season of his career this year, hitting .282 with 8 home runs and 42 RBI. driven
In exchange, the Red Sox acquired Houston’s No. 29 and No. 30 prospects IF/OF Enmanuel Valdez and OF Wilyer Abreu.
Tommy Pham to the Red Sox
The Red Sox also made an interesting move to acquire veteran OF Tommy Pham from the Reds. Pham, 34, has spent nine years in the majors and is hitting .238, with 11 home runs and 39 RBI this year.
Cincinnati will receive a player to be named later or cash considerations in exchange for Boston.
