The virus that is fueling an increase in cases of monkeypox worldwide may be mutating faster than expected as it spreads from person to person, according to a study, as authorities move to expand eligibility for to vaccines to more groups that are considered at risk.
This evolution may explain why this monkeypox strain appears to be more transmissible, researchers in Portugal wrote in a study published Friday in Nature Medicine.
One of the study’s authors, João Paulo Gomes of Portugal’s National Institutes of Health in Lisbon, said the world was struggling with an outbreak “caused by a virus that presents [many] more mutations than we might expect for this type of virus ”.
“It was quite unexpected to find so many mutations in the 2022 monkeypox virus,” Gomes said. “In fact, given the genome characteristics of this type of virus, it’s likely that no more than one or two mutations will come out each year.”
His team, in fact, observed about 50. Viruses such as monkeypox have tended to be relatively stable, and previous outbreaks tended to disappear whenever a case was detected in places where the disease was not endemic.
The World Health Organization has convened a meeting of one of its advisory groups to determine whether the current monkeypox outbreak should be described as a public health emergency of international interest, the highest designation according to the international law. The Covid-19, for example, is thus classified. A decision could come as early as Friday.
The WHO does not have the authority to name the start of a pandemic, but began using the term Covid in March 2020 to raise awareness about the disease.

Gomes ’research used metagenomics, which can help reconstruct genomic sequences in a time series. His institution last month published the first draft of the virus genome in this outbreak.
Globally, health authorities are closely following the evolution of the outbreak. New York City became the last area to expand vaccination on Thursday; opened eligibility to men who have sex with men who have had multiple or anonymous partners in the previous 14 days. Previously, he had offered the vaccine, designed for smallpox, but shown to provide protection against smallpox from smallpox, to contacts of confirmed or probable cases.
The United Kingdom and parts of Canada have also expanded the use of the vaccine in a similar way, using Imvanex from Bavarian Nordic biotechnology. More than 3,000 cases have been reported so far, according to Our World in Data.
Smallpox of the monkey was first identified decades ago, although officials have noted a relative lack of literature on the subject. Some have said this was due to the previously limited area of spread of the disease.
