LONDON, July 2 (Reuters) – More than a million people gathered in central London on Saturday for a record parade of the 50th anniversary of Pride.
The three-hour parade, led by veterans of the LGBT movement who took part in the first march of British Pride, covered part of the original route in 1972. Organizers said there had been 30,000 participants,

The first Pride had seen several hundred protesters gathered by a strong uniformed police presence, but this time the partygoers with facial paint and waving rainbow flags were cheered on by a record crowd that, according to the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, surpassed one million.
Celebrities and politicians, including Labor opposition leader Keir Starmer, joined the party.
“Fiftieth anniversary and what, in my heaven, what a milestone! What a difference in society between then and now,” said John Clark, a council worker who watched the parade from the sidelines.
