Highlights

• Updates on the multinational monkeypox outbreak have shifted from news of disease outbreaks to a fortnightly status report. The status report will provide details such as the latest epidemiology, new guidance documents and updates on WHO advice. For information not included in this report, see the news of disease outbreaks published on June 27, 2022.

• The WHO released a guidance document to provide public health advice for meetings during the current monkeypox outbreak on 28 June. The advice was developed for host governments, public health authorities, national or international organizers and professional staff involved in the planning and delivery of meetings, including people who organize smaller meetings or attend meetings of any kind and size.

• The outbreak continues to mainly affect men who have sex with men who have recently reported having sex with one or more male partners, suggesting for the time being that there is no sign of sustained transmission beyond these networks.

Epidemiological update

From 1 January to 4 July 2022, WHO reported 6,027 cases of smallpox in monkeys and three deaths in 59 countries / territories / areas in five WHO regions (African region, African region). the Americas, Eastern Mediterranean region, European region, Western region). Since the previous News of Disease Outbreaks was published on June 27, 2022, 2614 new cases (77% increase) and two new deaths have been reported; nine new countries / territories / areas have reported cases. Ten countries have not reported new cases for more than 21 days, the maximum duration of the disease incubation period. This is the first time that local transmission of monkeypox to newly affected countries has been reported without epidemiological links with countries that have previously reported monkeypox in West or Central Africa.
