The Montreal Canadiens made major moves in the first round last night, not only selected Juraj Slafkovsky over Shane Wright in first place overall and then took another Slovakian in 26th place to Filip Mesar, but they went get a double change to move first to 13th place overall. Alexander Romanov and the draft pick, then turn that first-round player over to acquire central midfielder Kirby Dach of the Chicago Blackhawks. What will be the second day of paperwork reserved for the Kent Hughes, the Habs and the 10 elections they still have?
Surely there will be more transactions, though probably not with the same shock value as the Dach-Romanov agreement. The general manager will try to add more talent from the draft class and will probably also consider next season with some selection exchanges. So far, both elections have been for the extremes, so we can probably expect to see some other positions centered today. We’ll have our first idea of the plan right away, when Hughes makes the initial selection in the 33rd overall.
