Attorney Jason Moffett told the Canberra Times that Kyrgios was aware of the indictment.
“It’s in the context of a domestic relationship,” Moffett said.
“The nature of the charge is serious and Mr Kyrgios takes the charge very seriously.
“Given that the matter is before the court … it has no comment at this stage, but will eventually issue a press release.”
Kyrgios will face Chilean Cristian Garin for a place in the Wimbledon semi-finals on Wednesday (UK time), after beating Brandon Nakashima in five sets on Monday.
He has only reached the quarterfinals of the singles tournament once before, in 2014.
His only Grand Slam victory was in men’s doubles at this year’s Australian Open, along with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Kyrgios was born and raised in Canberra and ranks 40th in the world.
