Nintendo acquires the CG animation studio and renames it Nintendo Pictures

Nintendo has signed an agreement to acquire the animation company CG Dynamo Pictures in order to develop visual content with Nintendo IP. The gaming company is buying 100% of the outstanding shares of Dynamo Pictures and renaming it Nintendo Pictures Co., Ltd. The deal is expected to close on October 3rd.

According to a regulatory filing, Nintendo stated:

Nintendo has decided to acquire 100% of the outstanding shares (excluding treasury stock) of Dynamo Pictures and turn it into a wholly owned subsidiary to strengthen the visual content planning and production structure in the Nintendo group.

The deal suggests Nintendo is expanding further into the entertainment business. Having a studio gives Nintendo the freedom to produce its own content. While she’s not sure if the producer will develop feature films, game scenes or short films, it’s exciting to think about all the possibilities. This strategy of video game companies that develop content for IP-based movies and TV series is not new. Sony, responsible for Playstation, is also ready to develop titles with its large video game IP library. Projects already in production include Twisted Metal, The Last of Us and Ghost of Tsushima. There are 10 more in development.
