Northeastern Ontario remains mostly orange

The NDP retained much of the constituencies in northeastern Ontario in the 2022 general election.

The party retained its seats in Sudbury (Jamie West), Nickel Belt (France Gélinas), Temiskaming-Cochrane (John Vanthof) and Mushkegowuk-James Bay (Guy Bourgouin).

Meanwhile, on the Timmins ring road, former NPD MP Gilles Bisson, who held the constituency for 32 years, was defeated by former mayor and PC candidate George Pirie, marking the end of an era. .

The Tories also endured Nipissing riding where Vic Fedeli won easily. In Parry Sound-Muskoka, a circus of Norm Miller since 2001, he chose another conservative after Miller did not ask for re-election. Graydon Smith has been the PC MP in this party since tonight.

A Sault Ste. Marie, PC candidate Ross Romano also stayed in her seat.

Moving northwest to Thunder Bay-Superior North, riding in the hands of Liberal Michael Gravelle since 1999, New Democrat Lise Vaugeois claimed victory tonight.

Gravelle announced this year that he would not seek re-election after his previous cancer returned.

Greg Rickford (PC) kept his seat on Kenora-Rainy River. He will have a friend in neighboring Thunder Bay-Atikokan while NDPer Judith Monteith-Farrell lost her seat to Conservative candidate Kevin Holland.

Two motorcycles from the north were among the 19 that experienced delayed results tonight. The results are now for Kiiwetinoong (where Sol Mamakwa of the NDP remained in his seat) and for Algoma-Manitoulin (where the NDPer Michael Mantha held his seat).

Overall, although the results are yet to be confirmed, Doug Ford led the PCs to a majority government with more than 80 seats.

The NPD will continue to be the official opposition with 29 seats (results are still being reached at this time). However, the party will exercise this capacity without Andrea Horwath as its leader. Tonight he has announced that he will step down.

Once again, the Liberals will not have official party status if they have not won the necessary 12 seats. Leader Steven Del Duca has announced tonight that he will step down as leader.
