Nottingham Forest have reportedly started talks about signing Southampton midfielder Will Smallbone as an alternative to James Garner this summer transfer window.
Garner, 21, played a key role in the Reds’ promotion to the Premier League this season and formed a strong midfield relationship with Ryan Yates. The Manchester United player has been involved in all competitions 49 times, scoring four goals and assisting.

Forest is said to be eager to secure Garner for another campaign at City Ground, but is said to have competition from Leicester City and Leeds United. It was previously reported that United’s new boss, Erik ten Hag, is set to see Garner during the pre-season before making a decision on his future.
However, it is reported that Steve Cooper has already begun to work out alternatives if they cannot bring Garner back to Nottingham for his first season in the top tier for 23 years. According to Stretty News, the Reds have started “the first discussions” about a possible Smallbone move.

The 22-year-old midfielder entered Southampton’s academy and has been a constant figure in Ralph Haselhuttl’s squad ever since. Smallbone has made 20 first-team appearances since making his professional debut in January 2020.
The Saints man is said to be incorporated as a direct replacement for Garner and would add Premier League experience alongside Cooper.
