AFR Economics correspondent Ronald Mizen says Treasurer Jim Chalmers has “tried to re-establish the narrative” in his first press conference on the budget situation.

Mizen noted how Chalmer said the government had inherited a “terrible set of books,” calling the budget “black.”

“It was a distinctive change that we heard from the previous government and this government,” he told Sky News Australia.

“I don’t think you can get the scope of the savings just by doing a bug and waste audit.”
